Nigeria Government Inaugurates Siemens Energy Training Facility to Revolutionize Power Sector Workforce

The Federal Government of Nigeria on Tuesday commissioned the Siemens Energy Education and Development (SEED) training facility in Abeokuta, Ogun State, under the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI), marking a significant milestone in efforts to address critical skills gaps in the nation’s electricity sector.

The state-of-the-art centre is designed to train no fewer than 6,000 energy professionals over a five-year period, equipping them with world-class competencies to operate, maintain, and optimise modern power infrastructure. This human capital investment complements massive ongoing upgrades to transmission and distribution networks aimed at delivering reliable electricity to homes, industries, and businesses.

Speaking at the inauguration, Mr. Samaila Nasiru, Director of Human Resource Management at the Federal Ministry of Power, described the SEED programme as more than a training facility—it represents a strategic commitment to sustainable development in the power sector. “Infrastructure alone cannot solve our energy challenges,” he said. “Sustainable progress depends on highly skilled professionals capable of managing advanced systems.”

The programme will deliver internationally recognised certifications through partnerships with regulatory bodies such as the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN) and the Nigerian Electricity Management Services Agency (NEMSA). Training will extend across multiple locations, including Abeokuta, Offa, Ibadan, Ayede, Birnin Kebbi, Sokoto, and additional sites, aligning with local content policies to create jobs and position Nigeria as a regional hub for energy expertise.

Managing Director of FGN Power Company, Mr. Kenny Anuwe, emphasised that the initiative forms a cornerstone of the PPI’s broader goals of modernisation and expansion. He commended partners including Siemens Energy, the German Government, the European Union, and GIZ for their collaboration.

Siemens Energy’s Managing Director, Mr. Sheu Suleman, noted that the SEED programme directly supports President Bola Tinubu’s vision for resetting the power sector. It addresses technical losses while driving technology transfer and workforce empowerment, ensuring Nigerians are at the forefront of operating new infrastructure under the PPI.

The Presidential Power Initiative, executed through FGN Power Company in partnership with Siemens Energy, seeks to significantly enhance generation, transmission, and distribution capacity. Recent milestones include the approval of Engineering, Procurement, and Construction contracts for key substations in Abeokuta and other locations, with substantial additional transmission capacity expected online in the coming years.

This latest development underscores the Tinubu administration’s determination to tackle Nigeria’s power challenges holistically—combining hardware upgrades with robust investment in the human capital essential for long-term energy security and economic growth.
