The Federal Government of Nigeria and the European Union (EU) have reaffirmed their strong partnership to advance the Nigeria Solar for Health Project (NISHP), an initiative deploying clean, reliable solar energy solutions to primary healthcare facilities nationwide.
This pledge was highlighted during the third Federal Steering Committee meeting held in Abuja, where Ekiti and Gombe states were officially added as beneficiaries, expanding the programme from the initial five states—Abia, Akwa Ibom, Enugu, Ogun, and Plateau—to a total of seven.
Representing the Minister of Power, Chief Adebayo Adelabu, Assistant Director Temitope Dina emphasized that reliable electricity is essential—not optional—for effective healthcare delivery. It powers critical equipment, preserves vaccines, enables surgical lighting, and supports laboratory operations. In many rural and underserved areas, persistent power shortages continue to undermine primary healthcare services. NISHP directly addresses this challenge by installing sustainable solar systems, aligning with national goals for universal energy access, renewable energy growth, and enhanced social service delivery.
The Minister described the project as a vital link between energy and health sectors, positioning solar energy as a cornerstone of Nigeria’s energy transition. Successful implementation, he noted, will improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations and serve as a blueprint for integrating clean energy across other social sectors.
EU Head of Cooperation, Massimo De Luca, confirmed readiness to launch activities in the selected states, including the newly incorporated ones. Discussions at the meeting, involving representatives from all participating states, focused on ensuring long-term sustainability, clarifying stakeholder roles, maintenance strategies, and operational models—including potential private sector involvement—to guarantee effective rollout at both state and federal levels.
Implemented with technical support from partners such as NTU International, NISHP exemplifies collaborative efforts between the Federal Ministries of Power and Health, the EU, and other stakeholders to deliver integrated, impactful solutions for Nigeria’s energy and healthcare challenges.
As Africa’s leading energy platform, we will continue to track NISHP’s progress as it advances sustainable development and equitable access to essential services.
