Nigeria has successfully synchronised its national electricity grid with the West African Power Pool (WAPP), linking the country with a regional power system spanning 14 other nations.
The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO), in collaboration with WAPP’s Information and Coordination Centre (WAPP-ICC), confirmed that the synchronisation involved harmonising frequencies, upgrading system controls, and coordinating real-time operations across borders.
This milestone marks a significant step toward deeper regional energy integration. For Nigeria, it opens the door to improved grid stability, access to shared reserves, cross-border electricity trade, and foreign exchange earnings through power exports. Nigeria’s participation reinforces its leadership role within the region’s energy transformation agenda.
