MDGIF Commissions New CNG Station at OAU to Boost Gas-Powered Transit in Nigeria

The Midstream and Downstream Gas Infrastructure Fund (MDGIF) has launched an integrated Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) refueling station at Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), marking a significant milestone in Nigeria’s energy transition and domestic gas utilisation strategy.

The facility, constructed as part of MDGIF’s nationwide rollout of gas infrastructure, is one of 20 CNG refuelling projects being deployed across federal universities in partnership with private sector entities — including FEMADEC Energy Limited and the Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGi).

At the commissioning ceremony, MDGIF’s Executive Director, Oluwole Adama, described the station as a “practical demonstration of Nigeria’s gas-based energy transition,” emphasising its role in deepening domestic gas utilisation, promoting cleaner fuels, and stimulating investment in the midstream and downstream gas value chain.

The new OAU CNG station is designed to support both the university community and the surrounding host community by providing:

  • Access to CNG refuelling services

  • Vehicle conversion support for gas-powered transport

  • Deployment of CNG buses and tricycles to reduce everyday transport costs

  • Opportunities for research, innovation, and practical learning in alternative fuels

Vice-Chancellor Prof. Adebayo Simeon Bamire lauded the initiative, highlighting its potential to foster innovation, enhance sustainable transport, strengthen community ties, and create shared economic value.
