Abuja Electricity Distribution Plc (AEDC), a key player in Nigeria’s electricity distribution sector, has successfully transitioned into a holding company (HoldCo) structure. This strategic restructuring aligns with the provisions of the Electricity Act 2023, which empowers state governments to establish independent electricity markets and regulatory commissions.
The shift enables AEDC to enhance operational agility, strengthen governance, and improve service delivery across its franchise areas, covering the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) and parts of Niger, Kogi, and Nasarawa states.
As part of the transformation, AEDC has incorporated two new subsidiaries:
• Niger Electricity Distribution Company, operating under the Niger State Electricity Regulatory Commission (NSERC), led by Engr. Sam Odekina as Chief Business Officer and Acting Managing Director.
• Kogi Electricity Distribution Company, regulated by the Kogi State Electricity Regulatory Commission (KSERC), with Mr. Desmond Eboh appointed as Chief Business Officer and Acting Managing Director.
These subsidiaries remain fully integrated within the AEDC Group, maintaining a unified corporate identity and shared values.
Plans are also advancing to extend operations into Nasarawa State, with the transition process set to commence shortly.
AEDC has implemented uniform Conditions of Service across the parent company and its subsidiaries to ensure workforce stability, fairness, and alignment during this evolution.
Commenting on the development, AEDC Managing Director and CEO, Chijioke Okwuokenye, stated that the HoldCo model positions the company to adeptly address state-specific regulatory requirements while pursuing operational excellence, innovation, and superior customer service. He emphasised that the structure supports efficiency gains, growth opportunities, and meaningful contributions to Nigeria’s evolving energy landscape.
